$19.99 Evergreen DN-2000 Mp3 Player Review

While we're not a hardware/tech review site, we did notice the lack of a review for this little (cheap) beauty MP3 player. Check it out and let us know what you think!

Big Order: In under 8 days I'm holding in my hands a $19.99 MP3 player straight from Japan. My first thought (really) was that this could have come a bit quicker since the mail from Japan to my house was stamped only 2 days ago. To be fair I did get an email from AudioCubes (place of purchase) saying that this was on a bit of a back order. Still < 8 days is pretty good.

I Need One Now: Currently there seems to be only a few places that are selling this little gem. My guess is there might be more but the margins have to be RAZOR thin.

I bought mine from AudioCubes - Evergreen DN-2000

Like most folks, I've got a bunch of SD cards sitting around. Some from cameras, treos, etc. While I've thought long and hard about buying an iPod, I'm worried about exercising with such an $$$ unit.

Right out of the package I inserted the (included) AAA battery; took my 1G SD card, pushed it in and pushed the power button.... nothing.

Being a savvy tech guy (cough) I pushed and held the button this time. V'ioala a red light came on and I released the button. Quickly pushed in the (included) ear phones and listened... nothing! (ARGH)

I repeated this step over and over a few times until it dawned on me to try and hold the button PAST the red light and THEN the blue light came on. In a couple of seconds the music began.

Why didn't I read the directions? Well I and others looked at them but reading them was out of the question (not in English)

The included earphones have a neck strap which I would have otherwise thrown away but are integrated into the phones. I did try the player with the strap around the neck at the desk and felt a bit silly to be honest. The player is nice but it holds next to zero bling value.

The size of the unit (per the pics) is a semi rounded square that's just a bit larger than a AAA battery on both sides. Thickness is of a typical AA battery.

Controls are simple: power/pause, fw, rw, volume up/down. The buttons have a nice feel that you really feel/hear *click*. I'm guessing there will few times I see myself accidentally hitting the stop/FW/etc.

As you can tell No LCD.

When switching to the next song, the unit will fade-in/out which is nice on ears. This is especially true when your collection has a mixed bag of mp3s with different volume levels (frown).Skipping to the next song does fade out and then nicely back in for the next song but it seems to take a bit longer than I like. Trying to skip skip skip to say a next album or 10 songs ahead is no good. The unit seems to like when you click <pause> click <pause> click. Clicking too fast let's say 10 times may only move you forward a few songs. With no LCD and slow movements it can get a bit frustrating.

Holding the >| button does give you a fw/cue effect for playing that one part over and over again or skipping to your favorite part.

Battery Life: The marketing material says 4-5 hours. With the included battery, you would be lucky to get 2-3. Beyond that, grab a nice recharger. I did notice today that when the battery did die it let out some huge MP3 burps (garbage) before what seemed like locking-up and then powering down. Not good when you are playing a LOUD sound.

USB - The unit does have a USB connection and comes with a cable but I didn't even remove it from the pkg. My lovely e-machine came with a 1001 memory reader so I'm planning (like I usually do) to transfer files to/from the SD card itself.

The unit can handle folders so you can create a structure on the SD Card with say

Again, with no LCD and basic controls, you can't quickly move from folder to folder. It plays them in alphabetical order.

The unit does resume from the last song (even after adding songs to the SD card). This is both good bad. If you're lost on your SD card, there's no where to go except keep clicking FW until you get to something you know. I have yet to unplug the battery to see if it returns me to the beginning.

Conclusion - Get it. No matter if you have an MP3 player or not, I'm sure you'll need, loose or break one and need one in a jiffy. This unit has great sound, tech feel and did I mention the cost?

UPDATE: 1st Drop - Yup coming out of the car my hand decided to let go of the little player and it slid across the blacktop driveway (about 2 feet). I gave the formal "Ewww" and quickly snatched it up. No scratches to note but the SD card did pop-out a bit. A quick click out-in and the SD was seated.

The one thing that really interests me in this is the fact that it has some screws on the back of it which means it's only a matter of time before someone disassembles and integrates this into a TON of other items... off the cuff examples:
